About

Genocide No More — Save Darfur began Sunday, April 2 when prayers for the people of Darfur were incorporated into the services at the United Methodist Church in Redding. Over one hundred messages were sent to President Bush, asking him to use the power of his office to support a strong multinational force to protect the people of Darfur. Over $200 was donated to humanitarian relief for Darfur.

A member of the church, Marv Steinberg, who spoke at the services, then arranged for a program, “About Darfur,” at the church. The DVD, “A 21st Century Genocide,” was shown and was followed by a discussion moderated by Professor Jean Kachiga of Simpson University. At that meeting an advocacy group was formed and plans were made to participate in the “Day of Conscience” which included a vigil on the Golden Gate Bridge and a rally at Crissy Field in San Francisco on April 30. Twenty adults and teen agers made the trip to the city.

On Tuesday, May 9 a moving Darfur Prayer Service kicked off participation in the Fast for Darfur sponsored by Dear Sudan. The service included prayers and readings led by pastors and lay persons from the First United Methodist Church and members of Temple Beth Israel of Redding. Over twenty people joined the fast which will run through June 17.

It was also decided to affiliate with the Dear Sudan movement. Goals for Genocide No More — Save Darfur were approved as follows:

  1. Encourage prayers for the people of Darfur and for peace in the Sudan and Chad.
  2. Raise awareness and knowledge in Shasta County of the genocide in Darfur.
  3. Gather messages to be sent to president Bush and other elected officials asking them to end the genocide in Darfur, support a multi-national force to protect the citizens of Darfur, and increase humanitarian aid to the refugees in the Sudan and Chad.
  4. Network with other organizations in other communities in California concerned about the genocide in Darfur.
  5. Raise $15,000 as quickly as possible for humanitarian organizations providing relied for the displaced of Darfur.

To date we have sponsored an educational program, “About Darfur,” in April; held a prayer vigil on the Sundial Bridge in June; sent over 200 messages to President Bush asking him to take action to help stop the genocide, and by the end of June, raised and sent over $6000 to humanitarian aid agencies including the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Church World Services, and Doctors Without Borders for relief.
