Drink for Darfur and Hunger

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

What:
Drink for Darfur and Hunger will be held to raise $5,000 for the displaced victims of genocide in Darfur and the hungry of Shasta County. Participants are asked, when they eat out, to order water instead of a drink and then donate what they would have spent to Drink for Darfur and Hunger. Tracking is done on a simple chart. All proceeds will be split evenly between Genocide No More–Save Darfur and People of Progress. Donations should be made to People of Progress with “Darfur” written in the Memo line of checks.

Why:
Over 400,000 have been killed and 2,500,000 displaced in the Darfur region of Sudan. The displaced are living in camps with little food or water in Darfur and in Chad. $1.00 feeds a large family for one day. Many are also hungry in Shasta County. Thirty percent of the adults in the county don’t always have enough money for food.

Who:
Genocide No More–Save Darfur is a group of Shasta County residents, committed to stopping the genocide in Darfur and raising funds quickly for humanitarian aid to the victims. Sponsors include several Redding churches, Sisters of Mercy, and Students Against Genocide of Shasta High School. People of Progress: A Safety Net for the Safety Net annually helps 16,000 people build more stability in their lives and serves 95% of the homeless in Shasta County.

How:
Make checks payable to People of Progress and note Darfur on the memo line and mail to People of Progress, 1242 Center St., Redding, 96001

When/Where:
April 1 through June 30

General Update

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Shasta High School Students Against Genocide and the Shasta High School Orchestra benefit concert was a gathering of community members of all ages and faiths for the Darfuri cause. Under the leadership of Ms. Judy Champagne and Mr. Lou Pocari, the teachers at Shasta High, the students joined together and worked passionately to produce this benefit concert.

In addition to great music and soloists the Students Against Genocide read accounts from genocide survivors and showed a video of Camp Kounoungo resident Adam who is making the bricks by hand and collecting the books for the library. Adam is a teacher that is currently displaced because of the violence in Darfur.
The event raised over $3,000 which has been sent to aid in the formation of a secondary school in Camp Kounoungo.
